Bearman hits out at ‘unacceptable’ Colapinto after 50G crash at Japanese GP

Ollie Bearman has slammed Alpine's Franco Colapinto for his role in the Haas driver's 50G shunt at the Japanese Grand Prix, calling a move made by the Argentine "unacceptable."
Approaching Colapinto's recharging Alpine at Spoon Curve at Suzuka, Bearman was caught out by a closing speed of up to 50km/h, and took avoiding action onto the grass, and into the barrier after reaching 191mph.
The accident led to several drivers raising further safety concerns surrounding F1 2026's energy management rules, and forced the FIA to make a statement clarifying that a review into the new regulations would take place.
After a visit to the medical centre, team principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed that Bearman luckily had not suffered any major injuries, but while Colapinto avoided any punishment from the FIA after the incident, Bearman has placed blame on the Alpine driver.

Colapinto move was 'unacceptable', says Bearman

Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Bearman criticised Colapinto for moving across him prior to the corner, a move he may have got away with last season, but couldn't thanks to the nature of the new cars.
Bearman said: "That was 50 kph difference… that’s really an unfortunate result of these regulations.
"Franco moved across in front of me to defend his position. Last year would have been absolutely on the limit but probably OK with just a 5 or 10 kph speed delta. But with 50 kph, he did not leave me enough space and I had to avoid a much bigger crash.

Basically, when he moved left, it was small, but at that speed difference, any move is huge. So I was lucky to not hit him. It would have been much, much worse if I did."
What's more frustrating for Bearman, however, is that the drivers had spoken about giving each other "more respect" in the corners, with higher speed deltas to contend with, leading him to label Colapinto's move as "unacceptable."
Bearman added: "I think it was something we spoke about on Friday, which is even a bit more of a frustrating thing. We said between all the drivers, come on, we need to give each other a bit more respect.
Yeah. move to defend your position with a bit more time because the speed deltas are much higher than we’ve ever had in our sport and then two days later that happens which for me was unacceptable.

“So, we need to figure things out between drivers, have a bit more respect between drivers because I was really not happy with the action that he did.”

FIA flag ‘number one priority’ following Bearman’s Suzuka accident

Meanwhile, FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis has had his say on the Suzuka crash.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Tombazis acknowledged that high-speed crashes always come as a shock, admitting that while the incident was not expected, the issue of closing speeds had already been identified as a potential risk.

Tombazis said: "There have been talks about it but there was not easily the ability to act on it before we had a bit of time to analyse a few of the parameters.
When we’ve introduced changes in a much more hurried way, the risk is that we make things worse or we cause all sorts of other issues, so that’s why we need to have a bit of time to analyse. Clearly safety is the number one priority.”
