2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo once again unleashed a harsh critique of his current Yamaha motorcycle after a disappointing Jerez weekend, however, the team might have been able to deliver a silver lining at the Monday test. Quartararo once again struggled to perform at the Spanish Grand Prix, though he was still the top Yamaha rider by the end of the race in P14. The Frenchman is rumoured to be leaving the team at the end of the season
to depart for Japanese rivals Honda, a move which has evidently soured relations inside the Yamaha garage.
I’m not stupid; I know how to ride...
- Fabio QuartararoAfter the race, Quartararo had a brutal assessment of the bike's current issues, and couldn't think of a single positive to highlight:
"Unfortunately, there isn’t a single area where we’re strong or where I can say I feel comfortable." Said Quartararo, "I don’t feel comfortable when braking, entering corners, cornering, accelerating, or braking."
"There are so many areas where we have problems and struggle. Even if we solve one, another one appears. Personally, I’m not stupid; I know how to ride and how much we’re losing. It’s plain to see. A year ago I was on the podium, today I’m thirty seconds behind."
While it is evident that Yamaha are even less competitive this year than before, some
progress does appear to have been made during the Jerez test on the Monday following the Grand Prix. Quartararo finished P7 in the afternoon session, posting a lap time that was faster than any lap he achieved throughout the race weekend.
Quartararo will be hoping that some improvements can be made ahead of his home race in Le Mans, France, which is up next.
