Hello and welcome to GPblog’s live coverage of the Barcelona Grand Prix. Follow every moment as we bring you all the action from the Circuit de Catalunya!
The race weekend at Barcelona has, so far, unfolded in a similar fashion to much of the opening six rounds of the season, with
Mercedes emerging as the quickest across practice before ultimately securing pole position in qualifying. However, the key twist heading into race day is that it is
George Russell leading the charge for the team, rather than
Kimi Antonelli, as many have become accustomed to.
The British driver, currently on a four-race podium drought, delivered a stunning lap to secure pole position in Catalunya with a time of 1:14.679, more than three-tenths clear of Antonelli, who could only manage third.
Lewis Hamilton split the pair in second, with the
Ferrari driver just a few hundredths off Russell’s benchmark.

Lando Norris set the fourth-fastest time of the weekend with a 1:15.001, narrowly ahead of
Max Verstappen, who in turn was only a few hundredths quicker than
Isack Hadjar, who impressively joined him on the third row.
Oscar Piastri and
Liam Lawson qualified seventh and eighth, respectively, while Nico Hülkenberg and
Charles Leclerc, who suffered a heavy crash during his qualifying run, completed the top 10.
Russell reveals how he rediscovered his form
Following his pole position,
Russell explained how he approached the Spanish Grand Prix weekend with a refreshed mindset compared to recent rounds, a change that has clearly paid dividends so far.
The Briton finally got the better of Antonelli again, outqualifying the championship leader by more than three-tenths of a second. Speaking after qualifying, Russell admitted he felt back to his best after a difficult run of races disrupted by a mixture of misfortune and underwhelming performances.
While pole position marked a significant milestone, the Mercedes driver stressed that his greatest satisfaction came from the consistency he had shown throughout the weekend.
“I’m just really happy to be back in my groove over the course of the whole weekend. It’s been a difficult few races for me. Obviously, bad luck, there have been some poor performances in there, but I went back to an approach that I knew worked for me this weekend. More important than the pole position for me was that on every lap of the whole weekend, I was in the top two positions, and I felt confident, I felt good. I just felt like my old self again. So, regardless of what happened in Q3, that was the most important thing for me this weekend,” he said.
