Barcelona GP polesitter George Russell revealed after qualifying that he had approached the Spanish Grand Prix weekend with a different mindset compared to recent races, a change that has clearly paid off so far. The Briton finally got the better of Kimi Antonelli again, at least in qualifying, outpacing the championship leader by more than three tenths of a second. Russell also narrowly held off Hamilton, who put his SF-26 on the front row after finishing just a few hundredths shy of pole position.
Speaking after qualifying, Russell admitted he finally felt back to his best after a difficult run of races that had been affected by a mixture of misfortune and underwhelming performances. While securing pole position was an important result, the
Mercedes driver stressed that his biggest source of satisfaction came from the consistency he had shown throughout the entire weekend,
"I'm just really happy to be back in my groove over the course of the whole weekend. It's been a difficult few races for me. Obviously bad luck, there have been some poor performances in there, but I went back to an approach that I knew works for me this weekend. More important than the pole position for me was that on every lap of the whole weekend I was in the top two positions and I felt confident, I felt good. I just felt like my old self again. So regardless of what happened in Q3, that was the most important thing for me this weekend.
Russell revealed that the turnaround stemmed from a conscious decision to return to an approach that had previously worked well for him. Rather than continuing to experiment, the Briton opted to simplify things and focus on the fundamentals: "Car set-up, mentality, just going back to basics really. These cars are so complicated, the tyres are complicated, the power units are complicated, and it's challenging to get on top of things.
"Especially when I've got a guy like this next to me who's been performing so well, you're trying to constantly improve, and I think doing some copy-pasting probably really put me on the back foot. This weekend I've just gone in my own direction and that's what I've done in the past for the last few years, and I'm really glad to see it paying off."
Russell sets things straight in Barcelona: 'I feel like my old-self again'
Speaking immediately after qualifying,
Russell admitted he finally felt fully at one with the car again, describing the Barcelona weekend as his strongest in some time. The Mercedes driver explained that he had been able to deliver consistently throughout every session, allowing him to fight at the front and ultimately secure pole position.
Russell also reflected on a run of recent races that had failed to go his way, stressing that several circumstances had prevented him from converting his pace into results. Arriving in Barcelona, however, he approached the weekend with a fresh mindset and immediately felt comfortable behind the wheel, something he believes played a major role in his pole-winning performance.
The Briton revealed that Mercedes had initially expected McLaren to be its main rival in qualifying, but was not surprised to see Hamilton emerge as a contender for pole. Russell acknowledged that both Ferrari and McLaren look capable of challenging in Sunday's race and expects a difficult battle despite starting from the front of the grid.
