Racing Bulls (full name: Visa Cash App Racing Bulls F1 Team) is known as the sister team of Red Bull Racing. While the team usually operated in the midfield, it dropped to second-to-last place in the championship in 2022. In 2023 and 2024, the team still wasn’t where it wanted to be. In 2025, however, Racing Bulls took a step forward with Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar. In 2026, the team hopes for more with Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad.
Racing Bulls F1
In 2005, the struggling Minardi team was taken over by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz. The early years of Toro Rosso were challenging, partly due to an outdated Cosworth engine. The switch to Ferrari engines in 2007 brought improvement, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in China by newcomer Sebastian Vettel.
Regulation changes in 2007 limited collaboration between Toro Rosso and Red Bull, and the team was nearly sold. Despite this, Vettel secured a historic victory in Monza in 2008, which earned him a promotion to Red Bull. Toro Rosso developed into a junior team for talents such as Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon, under team principal Franz Tost and technical director James Key. They were later succeeded by Laurent Mekies (team principal), Peter Bayer (CEO) and Alan Permane (Racing Director).
After just two Grands Prix, Lawson’s Red Bull Racing stint came to an end. The New Zealander was sent back to Racing Bulls ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, while Tsunoda was promoted to Red Bull Racing for his home race. Lawson and Hadjar formed the Racing Bulls line-up for the remainder of 2025.
Mekies leaves Racing Bulls, Permane new team principal
Midway through 2025, Christian Horner was dismissed by Red Bull Racing. This also caused a reshuffle at Racing Bulls. Laurent Mekies moved to Red Bull to replace Horner as CEO, while Alan Permane took over as team principal from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards.
Lawson stays, Lindblad joins
Shortly before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2025, Red Bull confirmed that Lawson would remain with Racing Bulls. After a long period of uncertainty, the New Zealander secured a contract extension. Arvid Lindblad was promoted from Formula 2 and will be his new teammate.
Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar will form the Red Bull Racing line-up in 2026. Yuki Tsunoda moves into a test and reserve role for both teams.
F1 debut of Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen began his Formula 1 career with Toro Rosso in 2015 at the age of 16, alongside Carlos Sainz. After just over a year, he was promoted to Red Bull.
Toro Rosso continued to rotate drivers and switched back to Renault engines. In 2019, Daniil Kvyat returned and Alexander Albon joined, while Pierre Gasly moved to Red Bull before later being demoted again.
In 2020, under the name AlphaTauri, the team secured its second victory in Monza with Gasly. In 2021, Yuki Tsunoda joined the team.
Nyck de Vries made his debut in 2023 as Gasly’s replacement after impressing in Monza the year before, but failed to meet expectations and was replaced after ten races by Daniel Ricciardo. A later injury for Ricciardo opened the door again for Liam Lawson.
Racing Bulls in 2026
For 2026, Racing Bulls retains its name. Lawson remains with the team, joined by rookie Arvid Lindblad.
Hadjar moves to Red Bull Racing, while Tsunoda becomes test and reserve driver. Alan Permane continues as team principal.
From 2026, Racing Bulls will use a Red Bull Powertrains engine developed in collaboration with Ford.
From RB to Racing Bulls in 2025
In 2025, the team changed its name from Visa Cash App RB to Visa Cash App Racing Bulls. A new white livery was introduced.
Hadjar impressed in his debut season and scored a podium in Zandvoort. Lawson had mixed results, with a fifth place in Azerbaijan as his best finish.
Racing Bulls finished sixth in the constructors’ championship with 92 points.
AlphaTauri rebrand in 2024
In 2024, AlphaTauri was rebranded to Visa Cash App RB. The season was difficult, with an eighth-place finish in the constructors’ standings.
Tsunoda was the most consistent driver, while Ricciardo was eventually replaced by Lawson.
Which engine does Racing Bulls use?
In 2025, Racing Bulls used Honda engines under the Red Bull Powertrains name.
From 2026, the team switches to its own Red Bull Powertrains engine, developed in partnership with Ford.
Racing Bulls and LEGO
During the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, LEGO models of all teams, including Racing Bulls, were showcased. These sets are available for fans.
