Formule 1 laat mensen in de steek: 'Het is middernacht en we weten nog niks'

Het is middernacht in Australië en de Formule 1, FIA en de Australische organisaties hebben nog steeds geen besluit genomen over de Grand Prix van Australië. Het coronavirus teistert de Formule 1, maar het gebrek aan actie leidt tot onbegrip.

Waar grote sporten zoals de Formule E, NBA en de MotoGP hun seizoen tot nader order hebben uitgesteld en daarmee de gezondheid van hun mensen voorop stelt, is dat in de F1 niet het geval. Veel mensen hadden al hun twijfels bij het doorgaan van de Grand Prix van Australië, maar nu McLaren zich heeft teruggetrokken volgt er nog geen besluit.

Imago schade voor de Formule 1

Het is ondertussen al middernacht in Australië (het is daar tien uur later dan in Nederland), maar de mensen rondom het evenement weten nog van niks. Teams, fans en de media worden in het duister gelaten, terwijl de FIA, F1 en de Australische organisatie maar geen besluit durven te nemen. Er staat natuurlijk veel geld op het spel, maar dat mag in dit geval geen rol spelen.

Veel journalisten halen op dit moment dat ook flink uit op de sociale kanalen. Er wordt geen spaan heel gelaten van de organisatie en de Formule 1. Na het Ferrari-schandaal en de deal met Aramco doet de Formule 1 momenteel weinig goeds voor het imago.

Het is middernacht in Melbourne en we hebben nog geen idee wat er met de Australische Grand Prix gaat gebeuren en of iedereen die in de Formule 1-paddock werkzaam is bepaalde maatregelen zou moeten nemen. #F1 #AusGP

They just want to be told what they should do. Plenty of team members I’ve spoken to tonight don’t know what happens next and are as in the dark of the rest of us (literally - gone midnight here now) and angry about it #F1

Formula 1 and the FIA have have been coordinating with all the relevant authorities on the next steps. Our priority is the safety of the fans, the teams and all personnel at the race.

Hasn't been a good 10 days for #F1, has it? The Ferrari engine fiasco, signing a global partnership deal with Aramco and, now, a clusterfuck of an #AusGP weekend. All of this without any racing taking place yet!

Groeten uit Melbourne by night. De stad waar bijna iedereen die Formule 1 beroepsmatig volgt aanwezig is, maar eigenlijk niet meer wil zijn. Morgenochtend hier ook crisisoverleg. Gaat de Grand Prix nog door? Lijkt me niet. Of nog een dag de niets aan de hand show? #AustralianGP

Statement from the AGPC says: “The AGPC is currently in discussions with Formula 1, the FIA and the Department of Health and Human Services in relation to the broader implications of this test result.” Again, suggests not being prepared #F1
