Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has revealed he has been in contact with lawyers over the Monaco GP result, which has changed following Alpine's successful Right of Review eventually led to Pierre Gasly's on-track P3 being reinstated. Russell received the same five-second penalty that Gasly has had rescinded twice over, ultimately finishing P12 after having to also serve a Drive Through penalty in Monaco for failing to serve the initial punishment correctly.
As
GPblog understands, McLaren and Red Bull also
intend to appeal the latest verdict to the International Court of Appeal, after Hadjar and Oscar Piastri lost their places.
Wolff reveals lawyers talks after Gasly's Monaco P3
Meanwhile, Wolff reacted to the news of Alpine's P3 being reinstated at the Monaco GP by calling on the FIA to look into "
remedies" for
George Russell's race.
But then, the Silver Arrows boss later revealed he has also contacted lawyers over the race result: "We were on the phone with our lawyers to look at what can we do for George."
"The drive-through, if it didn’t happen at the end, is the equivalent of 20 seconds’ race time. What would 20-seconds [in] race time have meant for his result?
“Do we think that we realistically have a chance of reverting the result? I don’t think so. But we definitely have to give it a go if we see that there is a millimetre of chance to do so, and bring him back to whatever it was - P4, we’ve calculated, P3 or P4.”
Wolff backs Russell to bounce back in Barcelona
Wolff has also expressed his belief that Russell could be 50 points higher up in the standings had his luck been a bit kinder to him. After the P12 result in Monaco, the Briton is now in P3 behind Lewis Hamilton in the standings, 68 points behind Antonelli.
With Wolff's attention primarily on this weekend at Barcelona, he said the 28-year-old already appears to be "absolutely on it." He said: "Without the accidents, he would have scored solid points. And so this list continues and has been somehow the signature of this campaign so far. And on paper, he would have maybe been 50 points further up.
"He isn't. And he will cope well with that. He's absolutely on it. This morning's session at FP1, the debrief was very upbeat. He's come a little bit more back to how he likes the car. and I'm sure he will rebound. He's nobody else I would wish to have in the team. And then the two we have."
