Pierre Gasly has reacted to the shock news that his on-track P3 at last weekend's Monaco GP has been reinstated following Alpine's Right of Review. The Frenchman received two five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane, penalties the stewards have since rescinded. Gasly was one of five drivers to receive such a penalty, including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but saw Alpine, the only team not to serve their penalties during the race, have their Right of Review approved after it was proved that the distance used in calculating the official timing and pit-lane speed was "inaccurate and overestimated the speed" the Frenchman was going.
Following the stewards' decision, Gasly now has a maiden Monaco podium in the history books, with compatriot Isack Hadjar losing his first-ever podium finish for Red Bull. McLaren's Oscar Piastri has also been bumped down to P5, with both Red Bull and the papaya team understood to be appealing the latest verdict to the International Court of Appeal.
Taking to social media, Gasly reacted to the news, delighted with the effort of the Alpine team, but also the transparency of
F1 and the FIA during the team's appeal process. Posting a smiley photo in the post, Gasly said:
"WE GOT IT BACK!! P3 in Monaco!! "Been a rollercoaster of emotions the last few days, weird celebrations, but most importantly, incredibly happy we got our result back. Huge thanks to my amazing team and all the people who supported us!! Thanks FIA & F1 for the transparency of the situation. One to remember!"
Alpine lament 'unfortunate situation' despite Gasly's restored P3 at Monaco GP
Meanwhile, Alpine managing director Steve Nielsen has
reacted to the news of Gasly's restored P3. Speaking to media, including
GPblog, Nielsen said that while it was nice to have the P3 officially in the history books, it was a shame that Gasly and the team could not celebrate the podium properly on the streets of Monte Carlo.
He said: "Honestly, absolutely… if I could trade, I'd have that podium moment over the points. That's the bit we can't forget about. It's a shame for Pierre and it's a shame for the team, but we've got as much as we can. We've got the position and the points, which is nice, but if I could choose, I'd have the podium, that emotion, which is what we can't live."
On other team's decision not to submit a Right to Review, Nielsen said: "Well, I mean, it was a decision for them to make. I can't speak for how they did it. And maybe we were fortunate enough that we weren't the first to get it. but we'd already served our pit stop. So yeah, you can't unpick that.
"So it's a really unfortunate situation. With our case, it was relatively easy to unpick it, because it was all added after the race. But with theirs, you know, George Russell, for example, we will never really know. I don't know how you would begin to unpick that."
