Alpine Managing Director Steve Nielsen has reacted to the shock news that Pierre Gasly's on-track P3 at the Monaco GP has been restored. The French driver had lost the final podium spot to compatriot Isack Hadjar after receiving two five-second time penalties for pit lane speeding, but after Alpine's Right of Review, Gasly's P3 has been reinstated.
Gasly was one of five drivers to receive such a penalty, including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but saw Alpine, the only team not to serve their penalties during the race, saw their Right of Review approved after it was proved that the distance used in calculating the official timing and pit-lane speed was "inaccurate and overestimated the speed" the Frenchman was going.
Speaking to media, including GPblog, Nielsen said that while it was nice to have the P3 officially in the history books, it was a shame that Gasly and the team could not celebrate the podium properly on the streets of Monte Carlo. He said: "Honestly, absolutely… if I could trade, I'd have that podium moment over the points.
"That's the bit we can't forget about. It's a shame for Pierre and it's a shame for the team, but we've got as much as we can. We've got the position and the points, which is nice, but if I could choose, I'd have the podium, that emotion, which is what we can't live."

Nielsen: It's an unfortunate situation

When asked by GPblog whether he agreed it was a strange situation that only Alpine have been able to see their result changed, Nielsen responded: "Well I think we would have still done what we did because we wanted to understand it. We have very accurate on-car data and we've all incurred pit lane speeding before and when you incur it, most of the time we see it in our own data before the FIA even tell us and sometimes they tell us and we look and see it.
"So, every time we see it, the different thing was this time was all our controls engineers were saying there's nothing in the data. So that, added with the issues we knew from Friday, Saturday and the number of them, we were very, very sure."
On other team's decision not to submit a Right to Review, Nielsen said: "Well, I mean, it was a decision for them to make. I can't speak for how they did it. And maybe we were fortunate enough that we weren't the first to get it. but we'd already served our pit stop. So yeah, you can't unpick that.

"So it's a really unfortunate situation. With our case, it was relatively easy to unpick it, because it was all added after the race. But with theirs, you know, George Russell, for example, we will never really know. I don't know how you would begin to unpick that."
