Ferrari have arrived at the Spanish Grand Prix with one of their most significant upgrade packages of the 2026 Formula 1 season, introducing a series of aerodynamic developments aimed at unlocking more performance across the SF-26's operating window.
The Scuderia's extensive update package focuses on three key areas of the car: the front wing assembly, the floor, and the sidepods. With Mercedes currently leading the championship, Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who has changed his braking set up, will be hoping these changes can help close the gap at a circuit renowned for exposing the strengths and weaknesses of every car on the grid.
At the front of the car, Ferrari has revised the front wing footplate and introduced a new vane arrangement, alongside the addition of an endplate diveplane. The team has also optimised the spanwise loading distribution of the wing elements and integrated new steering mechanism links into a revised nose design featuring a raised lower surface.
According to Ferrari, these modifications are designed to improve airflow management around the front wheels, helping to better control wheel wake while providing engineers with greater aerodynamic balance options. The updated nose integration also delivers cleaner airflow through the centre of the car, enhancing overall aerodynamic efficiency.

The most substantial performance gains are expected to come from an extensive floor upgrade package. Ferrari has reduced the keel volume and redesigned several critical floor components, including the leading-edge profiles, floor claws, floor board elements and diffuser geometry.

Additional changes have been made to the rear floor corner winglets, diffuser sidewall cutout and diffuser winglet angle. The team says these developments improve the quality of airflow entering the floor, generating greater aerodynamic load while enhancing flow stability across a wider range of operating conditions.
Importantly, Ferrari believes the revised floor architecture will improve airflow energy directed towards the rear corners of the car, a key factor in maximising downforce and overall vehicle performance, which will please Hamilton's driving style after he made some strong improvements.
Complementing the floor revisions are updates to the sidepod and 'Coke-bottle' area. Ferrari has introduced a more inflated sidepod shoulder and adapted the coke-line bodywork to work in harmony with the floor changes. These modifications are intended to further manipulate front-wheel wake and rebalance pressure distribution around the front section of the floor.

Taken together, the package represents a comprehensive aerodynamic evolution rather than a collection of isolated upgrades, underlining Ferrari's determination to gain ground during the European phase of the season.

Mercedes refine the championship leader

Championship leaders Mercedes have not stood still, however. The Brackley-based squad has brought a smaller but targeted update to Barcelona, focusing on the rear wing.

Mercedes has added small winglets to the centreline section of the rear wing, increasing the camber of the upper element. The team believes the modification provides an attractive downforce-to-drag ratio for the characteristics of the Barcelona circuit, delivering additional rear-end load without incurring a significant straight-line speed penalty.
While Mercedes' update is far less extensive than Ferrari's package, it highlights the different positions of the two teams. Ferrari are chasing a step change in performance, while Mercedes continue to refine a package that has already placed them at the top of both championships.
With Barcelona traditionally serving as one of Formula 1's most revealing aerodynamic tests, this weekend could provide the clearest indication yet of whether Ferrari's ambitious upgrade package can reignite their title challenge.
