The Spanish Grand Prix continues under a new name in 2026, as the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix becomes a standalone event on the Formula 1 calendar.
Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix 2026
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya remains one of the most familiar tracks for teams and drivers. Located in Montmeló, the circuit features a mix of medium- and high-speed corners, combined with two main straights and multiple DRS zones.
From 2026 onwards, the race is no longer officially the Spanish Grand Prix due to the addition of a second race in Madrid. It is now listed as the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix 2026

- Practice sessions: Friday
- Qualifying: Saturday
- Race: Sunday
The event follows the Monaco Grand Prix and precedes the Austrian Grand Prix.
About Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The circuit has long been a benchmark track in Formula 1, previously hosting winter testing for many years. In 2026, teams return to Barcelona for additional private testing ahead of the official pre-season sessions in Bahrain.
The layout is well known across the grid, making it difficult for drivers to gain an advantage purely through track knowledge. Instead, performance differences come down to car balance, tyre management and execution.
Hot conditions are often a factor, with high track temperatures placing extra stress on tyres and strategy.
Spanish Grand Prix 2025
The 2025 race in Barcelona ended in disappointment for Max Verstappen. After running near the front and briefly taking the lead through strategy, he became involved in battles with Charles Leclerc and George Russell.
Contact between Verstappen and Russell led to a penalty, dropping the Red Bull driver from fifth at the flag to tenth in the final classification.
Oscar Piastri won the race from pole position, with Lando Norris finishing second.
Max Verstappen at Barcelona-Catalunya
The circuit holds special significance for Max Verstappen, as it was the venue of his first Formula 1 victory in 2016, making him the youngest race winner in the sport’s history.
He has since enjoyed strong success at the track, including multiple victories in recent years. Between 2022 and 2024, Verstappen won three consecutive races in Barcelona.
In 2025, he crossed the line in fifth but was classified tenth after receiving a penalty.
