Hello and welcome to GPblog’s live coverage of the second practice session of the Barcelona Grand Prix weekend! Make sure to follow all the build-up and on-track action from FP2 here!

George Russell tops rookie-filled FP1

The F1 action in Barcelona got underway with Mercedes' George Russell topping the timing charts in the absence of his teammate and championship rival Kimi Antonelli. The teenage sensation was replaced by Mercedes reserve Fred Vesti for FP1.
Russell's lap time of 1:16.363 was enough to edge out Oscar Piastri ahead of Barcelona's second practice. Meanwhile, the man now in P2 in the Drivers' standings, Lewis Hamilton was replaced by F2 talent Dino Beganovic, - the Swede's 1:17.778 brought him up to P7 with ten minutes to go.

Also impressing would have been Alpine reserve Paul Aron - climbing into the top 6 for Audi in FP1. McLaren reserve Leo Fornaroli also put in a strong performance, making the top five in the late stages as he replaced world champion Lando Norris for the session.

Gasly responds to reinstated Monaco P3

The big news to drop prior to the first practice was that Pierre Gasly has his on-track P3 reinstated at the Monaco GP. The Frenchman received two five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane, penalties the stewards have since rescinded.
Gasly was one of five drivers to receive such a penalty, including Hamilton and Russell, but saw Alpine, the only team not to serve their penalties during the race, have their Right of Review approved after it was proved that the distance used in calculating the official timing and pit-lane speed was "inaccurate and overestimated the speed" the Frenchman was going.

Taking to social media, Gasly reacted to the news, delighted with the effort of the Alpine team, but also the transparency of F1 and the FIA during the team's appeal process. Posting a smiley photo in the post, Gasly said: "WE GOT IT BACK!! P3 in Monaco!!
"Been a rollercoaster of emotions the last few days, weird celebrations, but most importantly, incredibly happy we got our result back. Huge thanks to my amazing team and all the people who supported us!! Thanks FIA & F1 for the transparency of the situation. One to remember!"
McLaren, and Red Bull, however, intend to appeal the latest verdict to the International Court of Appeal - Isack Hadjar saw his maiden Red Bull podium snatched away following Gasly's reinstatement, whereas Oscar Piastri was bumped down to P5.
Alpine's managing director Steve Nielsen spoke on other teams' decision not to submit a Right to Review, he told GPblog and others: "Well, I mean, it was a decision for them to make. I can't speak for how they did it. And maybe we were fortunate enough that we weren't the first to get it. but we'd already served our pit stop. So yeah, you can't unpick that.

"So it's a really unfortunate situation. With our case, it was relatively easy to unpick it, because it was all added after the race. But with theirs, you know, George Russell, for example, we will never really know. I don't know how you would begin to unpick that."
