Ahead of this weekend's Mexican Grand Prix, McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl has insisted his team will not get "carried away" by being on top of midfield in the 2019 season, as the German explained the Woking-based side aim to be "a lot higher" in the future than fourth.
As is tradition, the team principles' press conference took place between FP1 and FP2, with McLaren again being the quickest of the midfield in the first of the five sessions at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
When asked about the current battle for fourth place in the constructors' championship, Seidl explained McLaren will not be satisfied topping the midfield in the grander scheme of things, with the side aiming to climb back to the top of the grid in the coming years.
"It's obviously good to be in that position," he referred to being in fourth place leading Renault by 43 points.
"But at the same time, it's not something we get carried away from. The targets we have are a lot higher.
"Of course, we want to score this P4 this year but it's a lot more important to get everything in order [for next year] in the next three months, which we think is important to make the next step."
Currently, in Seidl's own calculations, McLaren are still about a second off the pace when it comes to race pace, a gap which Seidl and his men will work to chip away at in the coming months or years until they see a papaya orange car at the top of the podium.
