Wolff spots worrying McLaren trend Mercedes must 'find out'

After dominating the first half of the season, Mercedes are beginning to feel the pressure from a resurgent McLaren, who head to Monza on the back of consecutive victories with Lando Norris. The Briton has forced his way back into the championship conversation, although a significant points deficit still stands between him and the prospect of securing a second consecutive world title.

Kimi Antonelli tried to hold on for as long as possible, making the most of the track position he had gained into Turn 1 at the second restart. Ultimately, however, Norris simply proved too quick, sweeping past the Italian before pulling away and eventually crossing the line more than 10 seconds clear.

Speaking to GPblog and others after the race, Wolff openly acknowledged McLaren’s superior pace, particularly as the Grand Prix progressed. While Mercedes appeared to hold a slight advantage during the early stages on the medium tyre, the balance gradually shifted, with McLaren becoming increasingly competitive and eventually pulling clear of their rivals.

Mercedes have found themselves under increasing pressure from McLaren and Ferrari in the development race, but Wolff has revealed that the team simply does not have the financial freedom to respond to every upgrade introduced by its rivals. The Mercedes team principal explained that the available budget has been deliberately distributed across the season, with developments planned according to where the team believes they can deliver the greatest performance gain and championship benefit.

That approach means Mercedes cannot immediately react whenever Ferrari or McLaren introduce new parts, and Wolff believes the consequences are now becoming increasingly visible. With a significant upgrade potentially delivering several tenths of a second, falling behind in the development cycle can quickly translate into a noticeable performance deficit, helping explain why Mercedes have faced a tougher challenge than during their dominant start to the campaign.

Wolff nevertheless suggested that the situation could change towards the end of the season. Teams can choose different strategies for allocating their resources, and Ferrari and McLaren's more aggressive spending during the opening and middle stages of the campaign could leave them with less room for development later in the year. Mercedes, by contrast, have attempted to spread their resources more evenly across the season.
