Antonelli turns unwanted home-race setback into calculated opportunity

The championship leader is set to serve the penalty at his home event, with Monza now Italy’s only race on the calendar following Imola’s absence this season. It will immediately put Antonelli on the back foot in the fight for victory in front of his home crowd, although he can at least afford the setback from a championship perspective, having built a considerable advantage over his Mercedes teammate in the standings.

Speaking after the race at Zandvoort, which he finished second behind winner Lando Norris, the Italian remained positive about taking the penalty at Monza. Antonelli acknowledged the added significance of serving it at his home Grand Prix but maintained that the characteristics of the circuit make it the best place to do so. Despite the setback, the championship leader remains confident that he will still have the opportunity to recover through the field, secure a strong result and collect valuable points.

With more than half of the season completed and another three points gained over Russell in the Netherlands, Antonelli now holds a sizeable 59-point advantage over both his teammate and Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes’ decision to take Kimi Antonelli’s engine penalty at Monza may appear particularly harsh given that it comes at the Italian’s home Grand Prix, but the team believes the characteristics of the circuit make it the most logical place to accept the setback.

Toto Wolff explained that Mercedes’ simulations and calculations identified Monza as the best venue to take the penalty, with the decision driven entirely by competitive considerations rather than Antonelli’s nationality or the potential PR implications of compromising his home weekend. With the team focused on the championship, maximising performance over the remainder of the season ultimately took priority.

Although starting further down the grid will inevitably make Antonelli’s task more difficult, Mercedes believe Monza should provide him with a realistic opportunity to recover positions. The circuit’s emphasis on straight-line speed and its overtaking possibilities could help minimise the damage, while introducing a fresh power unit at this stage should also offer benefits beyond the Italian Grand Prix.
