All eyes are on the Chinese GP as the second race of 2026 season is about to begin, with Kimi Antonelli lining up on pole for the first time in his F1 career. Follow all the action on and off the track as our editor-in-chief Tim Kraaij brings you live updates straight from the paddock. Antonelli heads into the
Chinese Grand Prix from pole position after an impressive turnaround following a difficult Sprint. The Italian had dropped out of the podium places after receiving a ten-second penalty for his contact with Isack Hadjar, but responded in style by producing a superb qualifying lap to secure the first pole of his
Formula 1 career, also becoming the youngest pole-sitter in the sport’s history at just 19 years old.
Mercedes will lock out the front row, with his teammate managing to salvage second place despite a technical issue that limited him to a single flying lap in the closing stages of qualifying. It marks yet another dominant showing from the Silver Arrows so far this weekend.
Ferrari line up just behind with Lewis Hamilton in third and Charles Leclerc in fourth. The Scuderia have shown encouraging pace in Shanghai and will hope the strong launch characteristics of the Maranello-based team's power unit can give them an opportunity at the start, especially after already putting Mercedes under pressure during the Sprint. The third row is occupied by the two McLarens, which appeared slightly less competitive in qualifying compared to their strong showing in Sprint Qualifying earlier in the weekend.
2026 F1 Chinese GP: Starting Grid
With the top six positions entirely locked out by Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren, the grid then sees an excellent Pierre Gasly emerge as best of the rest. The Frenchman placed his Alpine in seventh, just ahead of the two Red Bulls.
Max Verstappen extracted the maximum from an RB22 that has so far looked off the pace of its rivals in China, while teammate Isack Hadjar will line up directly behind him. Oliver Bearman completes the top 10 after another solid qualifying performance.
