Kimi Antonelli claimed his first F1 Grand Prix victory at the Chinese Grand Prix. George Russell finished in second place, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium. This is the first time an Italian driver crossed the finish line first since the 2006 Malaysian GP, where Giancarlo Fisichella was victorious. As a result, only four points separate the two Mercedes drivers in the standings, in favour of Russell.
Lewis Hamilton also scored his first-ever Grand Prix podium with
Ferrari after a hard-fought battle against his teammate,
Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque driver finished in fourth place, while Oliver Bearman returned to the top five with a superb race.
Pierre Gasly finished sixth, ahead of Liam Lawson. Isack Hadjar, Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto all scored their first points of the season as well.
As it happened
It was a difficult start for McLaren before the Grand Prix had even begun at the
Shanghai International Circuit, as both drivers were unable to start the race, which meant that the third row effectively disappeared. Moreover, Alexander Albon and Gabriel Bortoleto were also unable even to start from the pit lane.
Hamilton and Leclerc once again got off to a great start. The seven-time world champion took the lead from Antonelli, while the Monegasque driver got up to third place. However, within a couple of laps, the two Mercedes were able to get past the Ferraris and retake first and second place.
Verstappen had another difficult start with the RB22, losing a total of four positions by the end of the first lap.
After starting on the soft tyres, the Dutchman entered the pit lane already on Lap 10. A lap later, the Safety Car appeared for the first time as Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stopped in Turn 2. Unlike in Australia, not only Mercedes but also the two Ferraris entered the pit lane.
After the restart, into Turn 4, Russell locked up behind Esteban Ocon and Franco Colapinto, who had opted against entering the pit lane, and Hamilton took advantage of that, overtaking his ex-teammate. The Mercedes driver also lost a position to Leclerc, while Hamilton wasted no time going after Antonelli as well.
After everyone had their tyres in optimal range, the battle between the two Ferraris continued on Lap 24. Leclerc got past Hamilton into the penultimate corner, but the Briton tried to return him the favour into Turn 1. Russell also tried to take advantage of the situation, but failed to gain a position.
After another lap-long battle between the two Ferraris, Russell managed to capitalize on the situation, and got up to third place. By Lap 30, he also got past Leclerc as well.
On Lap 33, after Colapinto exited the pit lane following his pit stop, he was spun by Ocon in the first corner. The Haas driver was handed a 10-second penalty for the incident as well. The Argentinian was able to continue, unlike Fernando Alonso, who had to park his Aston Martin in the garage.
After a brief interruption, the Ferrari battle continued on Lap 35, after Leclerc made a mistake in the final hairpin, opening the door for his teammate.
After Hamilton began opening a gap on Leclerc, Verstappen's RB22 had an issue, and the four-time world champion was asked to return to the pit lane and retire his car. The Dutchman was running in sixth place.
In the end, Antonelli did make his life a little bit more difficult with three laps to go, locking up into the penultimate corner. After Peter Bonnington's message, the Italian brought his Mercedes home to score his first victory in his career.
