For now, it mostly seems like rumours, and there does not appear to be a deal between Max Verstappen and McLaren. But a British F1 website again reports that an agreement is nearing between the four-time world champion and the reigning constructors’ champions. GPblog reported a week ago on persistent rumours about a possible move by Max Verstappen to McLaren, most likely as a replacement for Oscar Piastri. This website did add the disclaimer that these were indeed paddock rumours in F1, observed by many, but no confirmation could be given that a deal was in the works.
In the days after the initial news,
GPblog stayed in contact with sources in the F1 paddock. Although the rumors persisted, there were increasing indications that a quick deal would not materialize. The website heard that there have indeed
been talks between McLaren CEO Zak Brown and the Verstappen camp, but that a partnership may only be an option in the years after 2027.
'Verstappen nearing agreement with McLaren'
PlanetF1, however, wrote again this Monday that McLaren is “in advanced negotiations with Verstappen over a possible switch to Woking for the 2027 F1 season”. The British website does not make clear who the source of this report is, later in the article reiterating that Verstappen is “in the final stages” of contract negotiations.
Granted, there is always a chance that Verstappen will switch to the British team after the current season. After all, this is
Formula 1, and stranger things have happened. Still, it rather appears that Verstappen has not yet made a definitive decision about his future. According to
GPblog’s sources, staying with Red Bull Racing and stopping Formula 1 (at least for a season) are
the most likely options for the Dutchman. There is simply no room for Verstappen at the other F1 teams.
