Lewis Hamilton is on pole position for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. It was a mixed-up qualifying session, with George Russell failing to reach Q2 and Carlos Sainz failing to reach Q3. McLaren demonstrated strong pace again, as did Alfa Romeo, who had both Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou in the top 10.

Formula 1 tested a new qualifying format, which made teams use hard tyres only in Q1, medium tyres only in Q2 and soft tyres only in Q3. In what could be a historic record-breaking day for Red Bull by winning 12 consecutive Grands Prix, Max Verstappen will start from second place. He finished just 0.003 seconds behind pole-sitter Hamilton.
