From spectacular crashes and commanding victories to unforgettable controversies, the British Grand Prix has produced some of Formula 1's most iconic moments over the years. Here's a look back at some of the standout chapters from Silverstone's recent history.
Silverstone has produced some of Formula 1's most unforgettable races in recent years. One of the most memorable moments came in 2014, when Kimi Raikkonen suffered a huge crash on the exit of Aintree before rejoining the track and triggering a major accident involving Felipe Massa. The race was red-flagged for more than an hour while the barriers were repaired, before Lewis Hamilton stormed back from sixth on the grid to take victory.
Four years later, Raikkonen and Hamilton were once again at the centre of the action. Their first-lap contact in 2018 dropped the Briton to the back of the field, but he recovered brilliantly to finish second. Victory went to Sebastian Vettel, whose decisive move on Valtteri Bottas proved to be a crucial moment in that year's championship battle.
The 2019 edition is best remembered for the thrilling fight between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, with the pair producing a spectacular sequence of overtakes before Verstappen finally made his move stick at Stowe.
Another iconic chapter came in 2020, when Hamilton suffered a front-left tyre failure on the final lap. Despite limping around almost the entire final lap on three wheels, the Mercedes driver managed to hold on and claim one of the most dramatic victories of his career ahead of Verstappen.

The 2021 British Grand Prix delivered one of the defining moments of the modern Formula 1 era. After an intense opening lap, Hamilton and Verstappen collided at the ultra-fast Copse corner, sending the Red Bull driver into the barriers in a massive 51G impact. While Verstappen was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks, Hamilton served a 10-second time penalty before recovering to claim victory in front of his home crowd, a result that sparked fierce controversy and became a pivotal turning point in that year's title fight.
A year later, Silverstone witnessed another incident that stunned the F1 paddock. Guanyu Zhou's Alfa Romeo flipped upside down at the start before sliding hundreds of metres and crashing into the catch fencing, with the Halo proving crucial in protecting the Chinese driver. Despite the frightening opening-lap accident, the race went on to produce a landmark result as Carlos Sainz claimed the first Formula 1 victory of his career.
Silverstone added another historic chapter in 2024 as Lewis Hamilton finally returned to the top step of the podium after a wait of 945 days. In a rain-affected race packed with changing conditions and strategic twists, the Briton secured a record-breaking ninth victory at his home circuit, ending a winless streak that had stretched back to the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The following year, the home crowd had another reason to celebrate as Lando Norris claimed his maiden British Grand Prix victory in a chaotic wet-weather race. It was also a landmark afternoon for Nico Hulkenberg, who finally ended Formula 1's longest podium drought by securing the first top-three finish of his career after 239 Grands Prix.
