Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is remaining cautious ahead of the upcoming round at Silverstone, noting that the gap to their rivals is steadily shrinking and that nothing can be taken for granted for the remainder of the season.
Mercedes head into their home race on the back of George Russell's victory at the Red Bull Ring last weekend, with the Briton returning to winning ways for the first time since the season opener in Melbourne. Kimi Antonelli also made his way back onto the podium after his DNF in Barcelona, while the championship leader piled the pressure on both his teammate and Max Verstappen in the closing stages of the race.
Ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix, Toto Wolff highlighted Silverstone as one of the most iconic venues on the Formula 1 calendar, adding that racing so close to Mercedes' factories gives the event extra significance for the team. Even so, he underlined that sentiment counts for little once the weekend begins, with results determined solely by on-track performance.
Looking back at Austria, Wolff welcomed Mercedes' double podium but warned against expecting a repeat at Silverstone. He explained that the current competitive picture is incredibly close, with even small differences capable of reshuffling the order from one race to the next, making it impossible to take anything for granted.

"Silverstone is one of the standout races on the calendar. It’s a great circuit, the fans create a unique atmosphere, and with our factories just a few miles away, it is something of a home race for us. Once we take to the track though, it’s about performance, not the occasion.
"We delivered well in Austria with a double podium, but we are not in a position where we can assume that carries over. The field is too tight, the order is changing too quickly, and what looked competitive one week can look very different the next. That’s the reality of where F1 is right now."
Wolff concluded by saying the fight at the front remains incredibly tight, with the balance of power capable of shifting from one weekend to the next as teams continue to bring updates. He credited Mercedes' consistency to the way the team has executed race weekends so far, adding that the focus remains on extracting the maximum from every opportunity while continuing to unlock more performance from the car.
"We are in a close development fight. One team finds a step, others react, and it compresses or changes the order. Consistency has been our strength so far and that comes from discipline and doing the basics right. Our focus is on continuing to execute well, bring performance to the car where we can, and not give away anything on track."

Wolff backs Verstappen in title race: 'He's always good for playing a role'

The biggest threat to Mercedes in Austria last weekend undoubtedly came from the four-time world champion, who closed right onto George Russell's gearbox in the closing stages after piling the pressure on throughout the race.
Speaking with GPBlog after the race, Wolff praised Verstappen's performance, saying the Dutchman made the difference more than the car itself by extracting everything it had to offer. He also pointed to the contrast with Verstappen's teammates as further proof of his ability, adding that a driver of his calibre can never be underestimated in a championship fight.
"Max is always good for playing a role in the championship. The car performed well this weekend. I think the biggest factor this weekend was Max, to be honest. And he's able to just wringle out everything that is in the car. You can see that with his teammates. And that's why you can never, never discount or underestimate the first-time factor for a championship."
