While it was a near-perfect weekend for Russell and the other front-runners, it proved to be a forgettable one for Hamilton and his Scuderia
Ferrari teammate
Charles Leclerc. Despite locking out the front row in qualifying, the pair lacked the pace to challenge for victory during the race.
McLaren also endured a frustrating weekend, with
Oscar Piastri and
Lando Norris having to settle for fourth and seventh places respectively.
Russell's victory sees him move ahead of Hamilton into second place in the drivers' standings, while also cutting Antonelli's championship lead to 40 points.
Amid the reaction following the Austrian Grand Prix, Hamilton gave his verdict on his thrilling battle with Verstappen after the Dutchman called for a penalty over team radio, claiming he had been forced off the track.
The pair went wheel-to-wheel on two occasions during the race – first before the opening round of pit stops and again afterwards, when Verstappen caught and eventually passed Hamilton before pulling away. In their first encounter, however, the seven-time world champion stood his ground and kept the position.
The stewards briefly noted the incident for potentially forcing another driver off the track but later cleared Hamilton, taking no further action. "He went off on the outside. You don't expect to go around the outside of a champion. I wouldn't expect to go around the outside of him there and hold a line. So, he was behind at the apex, and therefore, he should have backed out, but he didn't. I left him just enough room," Hamilton said after the race.
Hamilton took the chequered flag in fifth place, while Verstappen returned to the podium with a second-place win, his second podium finish of the campaign so far.
