The FIA stewards have issued their verdict following the post-race investigation involving Oscar Piastri after the Australian was summoned for driving unnecessarily slowly during the reconnaissance laps ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix. The
McLaren driver had been accused of a
potential breach of Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code, as well as failing to comply with the Race Director's Event Notes. He was subsequently summoned to appear before the stewards at 17:10 local time to explain his version of events.
After hearing from the driver and a McLaren representative, and reviewing the available video, timing and onboard footage, the stewards concluded that the Australian had remained comfortably within the required delta time during the reconnaissance laps. As a result, the investigation was closed with no further action taken.
"The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 81 (Oscar Piastri), team representative and reviewed video, timing in-car video evidence. After reviewing the video footage it was evident that the car was well within the specified delta time. Therefore the Stewards take no further action."
The Australian did finish ahead of his teammate and reigning world champion Lando Norris, crossing the line in fourth place. However, it was still an underwhelming weekend for McLaren, which was never in contention for the podium as Mercedes and Red Bull battled it out for victory.
