Toto Wolff highlighted Max Verstappen's outstanding performance at the Austrian Grand Prix, insisting a driver of his calibre can never be written off in the title fight despite the sizeable points deficit he still has to overcome. Speaking with GPBlog among other media after the race, Wolff admitted he was not surprised by Verstappen's performance, arguing that the Dutchman himself was the biggest factor behind Red Bull's competitiveness in Austria. The Mercedes team principal described Spielberg as one of Verstappen's strongest circuits, adding that the RB22 also appeared to be performing well throughout the weekend.
"I'm not surprised at all because Red Bull is one thing, but it was Max Verstappen. And for me, how it feels is like Max won every single race here that he's ever participated in whatever car. So Spielberg is one of his strong places. The car seems to have been going well."
Finally, Wolff stressed that Verstappen should never be ruled out of the championship fight, arguing that the Dutchman remains Red Bull's biggest strength. He praised the four-time world champion's ability to extract everything from the RB22, pointing to the contrast with his teammates as evidence of the difference he makes, and insisted a driver of Verstappen's calibre can never be underestimated in a title battle.
"Max is always good for playing a role in the championship. The car performed well this weekend. I think the biggest factor this weekend was Max, to be honest. And he's able to just wringle out everything that is in the car. You can see that with his teammates. And that's why you can never, never discount or underestimate the first-time factor for a championship."
Verstappen jokes about another championship comeback scenario
Verstappen did not completely dismiss
the idea of another late-season comeback, but made it clear that Red Bull still has several areas to clean up before it can realistically think about turning the championship fight around. The Dutchman acknowledged that the team has strong pace and more time available than at the same stage last year, but stressed that the gap remains significant and that performance alone will not be enough.
According to Verstappen, Red Bull still needs to become more consistent across the board, from race starts to internal procedures that are not always visible from the outside. While he avoided framing it as criticism, he admitted the team is still searching for the level of solidity it has shown in the past. Only then, he suggested, could the title picture start to look different.
"Well, I think there are more races left than last year. But it's a very big gap. I think for us, we have very good pace, but I think to fight for a title race we still have too many issues, if that's from a start to just procedural issues in the background that even I think you guys don't know about, but I know about. I think we just need to be a little bit more around still. It's not a big criticism or whatever. I think everyone is aware. We always want to be better. We chase to be the best. So we just need to focus on all of those things. If you're a bit more, let's say, rock solid, and we've shown that in the past, then of course it's a different story. Hopefully it doesn't take too long, but we have still a little bit of work to do."
