Max Verstappen jokingly pointed out that, with more races remaining than at the same stage last season, there is still time to close the sizeable gap in the drivers' standings and potentially mount a title challenge against George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Around the summer break last year, the four-time world champion found himself as many as 104 points behind Oscar Piastri, only to come within touching distance of the title by the time the championship reached Abu Dhabi. The story has followed a similar path so far this season, albeit with more drivers involved, as Verstappen reduced Kimi Antonelli's lead by three points in Austria and now trails the championship leader by 98 points with two-thirds of the season still to run.
Asked whether he believes he can mount another title comeback like the one he produced last season, Verstappen admitted the situation remains difficult despite there being more races left than at the same stage a year ago.
While he praised Red Bull's outright pace, the Dutchman stressed the team is still dealing with too many issues, ranging from race starts to internal procedural matters, and insisted those problems must be resolved before a genuine championship challenge can become realistic. He added that everyone within the team is aware of the areas that need improving and expressed confidence Red Bull can become more consistent again, although he acknowledged there is still work to do before reaching that point.
"Well, I think there are more races left than last year. But it's a very big gap. I think for us, we have very good pace, but I think to fight for a title race we still have too many issues, if that's from a start to just procedural issues in the background that even I think you guys don't know about, but I know about.

"I think we just need to be a little bit more around still. It's not a big criticism or whatever. I think everyone is aware. We just want to be... we always want to be better. We chase to be the best. So we just need to focus on all of those things. If you're a bit more, let's say, rock solid, and we've shown that in the past, then of course it's a different story. Hopefully it doesn't take too long, but we have still a little bit of work to do."

Verstappen points to RB22 issues after missing out on victory in Austria

Speaking after the race, Verstappen described it as a very positive afternoon for Red Bull, highlighting the entertaining early battle before the focus shifted to tyre management. He explained the RB22 performed well for roughly the first half of the Grand Prix, but later developed a few issues that prevented him from finding a consistent rhythm. Despite that, the Dutchman was pleased to finish second and end the race within striking distance of victory, describing the result as an encouraging one for the team.
"I think it was, of course, a very good race for us. The first few laps were quite fun, and then it was basically just about trying to manage your tyres. Honestly, I think the car was in quite a good window for, I would say, half of the race, and then we just picked up a few, let's say, issues with the car, which then prevented me from basically finding that nice rhythm. But still, to be second, that close to a win, I think is extremely positive for us. So in that sense, for sure, I'm very happy."
