George Russell has revealed that he doesn't want Mercedes to simply dominate the 2026 Formula One championship and would love a "big fight" that involves their rival teams. Mercedes have dominated the 2026 championship so far winning all but one race so far this season. Russell closed the gap at the top to teammate Kimi Antonelli to 40 points after
winning the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend.
Lewis Hamilton won for Ferrari in Barcelona, while Max Verstappen and the two McLaren drivers of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both could have had wins to their name this season after pushing the Mercedes drivers at different races.
Russell wants "big fight" for F1 championship
Speaking to GPblog among other media outlets after the Austrian Grand Prix, Russell said that he wants to compete with all the best teams for the championship, as he reminisced on title fights in the junior categories where he would compete with up to five drivers all going for glory.
Asked whether the ideal scenario would be for Mercedes maintaining their dominance, or for Verstappen and other Ferrari drivers to steal points from them, he said: "I’d love a big fight, to be honest. You want to have the best drivers with the best teams all fighting. And of course, Max is very much one of the best, and Lewis, Charles, Lando, Oscar, you want them to be in that fight.
"Unfortunately, the midfield and backfield teams are not there, but more the merrier. And it feels like when we all raced go-karting, you were never in a one-on-one battle with anybody. There were always, normally at least, three drivers in the fight for a championship. When I raced F2, F3, F4, there were three, four, five drivers all fighting. And yeah, that’s how it should be."
