Max Verstappen said Red Bull need to do "a lot of work" to understand the problems the Milton Keynes team experienced in the first two practice sessions in Suzuka, with the Dutchman reflecting on "not a very good" day. The four-time world champion finished P10 in FP2, and yet again did not look fully comfortable in an RB22 he has criticised for poor drivabilty so far in 2026.
The Red Bull driver spoke of "two opposite" set ups between FP1 and FP2 but lamented the fact that both lacked an optimal balance.
'Not a good day,' Verstappen says
Speaking to F1 TV, Verstappen was asked on how Friday's action unfolded for him.
"Yeah, not very good to be honest. Just lacking balance, grip. Two opposites from FP1 to FP2.
"And yeah, both of them not very good. So from our side, yeah, a lot of work to be done to also understand why we're having these kind of big problems at the moment.
"But yeah, not a good day."
Verstappen was further quizzed on effect of the sweeping changes made between the two sessions.
"Yeah, you just try to correct one thing and then you get another one. but never finding a good balance, basically.
"It's very difficult to solve at the moment, so I don't expect miracles overnight. We just need to understand probably our issues a bit more, where they are coming from."
