At the start of the race at the Madring, Max Verstappen clashed with Lewis Hamilton after cutting the chicane. Red Bull instructed him to give the position back, which he initially refused. The four-time world champion eventually moved aside very conspicuously and quite angrily. He clearly pushed back against Gianpiero Lambiase.
Verstappen and Hamilton became embroiled in a fierce duel at the Madring, forcing the Red Bull driver to take evasive action. Immediately afterward, Verstappen made it clear over the team radio that he felt Hamilton was responsible for the situation: "Mate, what the f**k are you guys talking about? He would've shunted it. Like what are you guys talking about? If I just stay on the track, I am out of the race."
Hamilton saw it completely differently and told Ferrari: "Max has to give the position back." Not much later, Verstappen was indeed told by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase that he had to let the seven-time world champion back through. Verstappen completely disagreed with that.

Verstappen made his frustration clear over team radio, arguing that he cut the chicane to avoid contact with Hamilton rather than to gain an advantage. The Dutchman was unhappy at being told to surrender the position, but Red Bull opted against taking any risks and instructed him to let Hamilton back through.
Verstappen complied before quickly overtaking the seven-time world champion again. At the front, Norris remained in the lead, 2.3 seconds clear of Antonelli, while Hamilton's race came to an early end after the Ferrari driver, running fifth, suffered brake issues and was forced to retire.
