Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo has said that he doesn't want another four-year deal when his current contract expires after this year, and then re-stated that he won't necessarily re-sign with Red Bull.
The interest of Mercedes and Ferrari in having the Aussie on their team next year is bigger than ever off the back of his sixth career win at China last weekend. Ricciardo again showed what he's capable of when given the proper tools, and with his contract expiring, this was a well-chosen moment for him to start performing.
"I don't want to have a long deal with a team," he told The Times.
"You never know what'll happen in the F1, everything can flip in an instant, and every year something will change in the sport.
"I don't see myself signing a four-year deal, I'd prefer signing for two years.
"In 2021 new rules will come into play so I want to wait and see what happens then."
The current engine rules as we know them will get a big overhaul after 2020. The new rule system should make it cheaper and less complex to produce engines, favouring new engine suppliers like Aston Martin to enter the sport. As always, the top teams don't like it when things get changed because they're scared to lose their position, and Ferrari even went as far as saying they would maybe abandon the sport if the new rules don't suit their needs.
As for Ricciardo, both Ferrari and Mercedes have expiring contracts in Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen, meaning they could both have a go at snapping up the services of the Aussie.
"If teams want me next season, they should get in touch," he said on the matter.
"As of now, I haven't heard from either team.
"Again, it's very simple, if we keep winning at Red Bull I'll just stay."
Does Red Bull have the tools to keep winning and keep Ricciardo happy? Or is he going to listen to offers from other teams?
