Fernando Alonso once again criticized the 2026 Formula 1 cars after qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver did not mince his words.
The Spaniard finished 18th in qualifying for the Madrid Grand Prix, but he gained a position on the grid after Carlos Sainz received a grid penalty for impeding Valtteri Bottas in Q1 on Saturday.
After the session, the Spaniard once again shared his frustration with the current generation of cars.
"It is. I mean, Is it is sad, you know, in a way with this generation of cars to to come to very nice circuit like like this one, with challenges here and there, like the Monumental corner, you know, Turn 12, and, the driver input is just nothing," he began to GPblog, among others.
"(My press officer) Michael can drive in Turn 12 because you go flat with no MGU-K deployment. And then at one point, the MGU-K comes, and then you go fast on the exits. But Formula 1 or motorsport in general should be that in Turn 12, if Michael is braver than me, he goes faster. If I have, you know, more attributes, I will go faster than him. That that's how he should be qualifying. And now it's just how much sock I have. I will go faster and slower."

'Even faster than Verstappen'

During the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem vowed to keep Alonso in the sport. Speaking at the Madring, the former two-time world champion was clear: things cannot continue like this in Formula 1.
Asked whether he was optimistic about seeing changes moving forward, he added: "I don't know. I mean, I have a lot of things to go through already, try to make my mind up for next year. And I did spoke with him (Ben Sulayem), but I speak with Stefano [Domenicali] regularly every week because, Formula 1 cannot continue in this way.
"I we have to we cannot wait for 2031 to have a a proper sport. So, I think it's also my responsibility to help them with my experience. Turn 12, you know, whoever is faster there is okay. You know? It cannot be I don't know."

Alonso did not want to point out another driver, so he compared his press officer to Verstappen once again. "It cannot be that Michael is faster than Max Verstappen if he has more battery. Because Turn 12 is such an incredible corner that he has to make the difference compared to Michael. And at the moment, we can't do that."
