Hamilton unsure how Madrid GP will unfold amid heat challenge

The seven-time world champion remained in contention for pole until the closing stages of qualifying, but ultimately had to settle for fifth, also finishing behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Nevertheless, the gap to pole-sitter Lando Norris remained relatively small.

Speaking during the traditional pre-race drivers’ parade, Hamilton praised the atmosphere in Madrid, describing the week so far in the Spanish capital as an impressive experience and thanking the city for its welcome.

Asked whether the occasion provided any extra motivation to fight for victory in the inaugural race at the Madring, Hamilton admitted he has little idea of what to expect. The Ferrari driver highlighted the challenging circuit and hot conditions, but stressed that he will give everything to try to secure the best possible result.

Hamilton’s qualifying proved largely trouble-free until the decisive stages of Q3, where he initially showed enough pace to move onto provisional pole. However, the Ferrari driver was unable to improve on his final attempt, struggling to find the same level of grip while also feeling he lacked power.

The seven-time world champion therefore slipped down the order as his rivals improved around him. Hamilton nevertheless felt Ferrari executed the session well from an operational perspective, putting his failure to remain in the fight for pole down to simply not having enough performance available on the final run.
