Marc Marquez won the Sprint at the Spanish Grand Prix. However, before switching his bikes after a crash on a wet track, the driver cut across the grass to enter the pit lane. This is why the defending world champion avoided a penalty.
Yesterday, the first flag-to-flag Sprint race in MotoGP history took place. Within a couple of laps, rain arrived, making conditions impossible for the riders in Jerez. Marquez was running in a provisional podium position when, in the final corner, he slid off the track. After recovering his bike, the Spaniard cut the track and went straight into the pit lane to switch to his other bike fitted with rain tyres. The incident was similar to Lewis Hamilton's at the Hockenheimring many years ago.
MotoGP explained why Marquez was not hit with a penalty. "Marquez entered the pit lane according to the published definition of crossing the Pit Lane Entry Timing Point, which is the entrance to pit lane where the 60km/h signs are displayed. There is no specific rule that says riders must enter pit lane from a specific place.
"Marquez likewise didn't disobey any marshal instructions, didn't cause any danger when he crossed the track as he waited for it to be clear, and he did not shortcut significant portions of the track thereby gaining an advantage."
After returning to the track, Marquez won the Sprint in rainy conditions after overtaking his teammate Francesco Bagnaia. Franco Morbidelli completed the podium.
