Arvid Lindblad became the first victim of the new Madring circuit. The Racing Bulls driver lost control of his car with just under half an hour remaining in FP2, bringing out the red flag.
The young Briton crashed at Turn 13, hitting the barriers with considerable force and heavily damaging his car. The red flag was necessary to allow the recovery vehicle to retrieve the car safely.
The session was halted for around 10 minutes before the drivers were able to return to the track for the final 10 minutes of running.
