Kimi Antonelli has topped the timing charts in the second practice session at the Spanish GP, finishing ahead of Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The young Italian's lap time of 1:33.662 saw him pip Leclerc to top spot in FP2 at the
all-new Madring, hosting the Spanish capital’s first Grand Prix since the Circuit del Jarama in 1981.
Like the earlier session on Friday, action was quick to get underway at the new track, with Antonelli, Leclerc and
George Russell separated by just 0.09s at the top of the timings after the first 15 minutes of FP2.
It was, however, a troubling second practice session for world champion
Lando Norris as
McLaren were forced into a gearbox change after just two laps, and failed to reemerge during the session. Norris was picked up on the radio saying
: "The gearbox is still in false neutral. It seems really bad. Something's not right. It's gone."At the halfway stage, the soft tyre running got underway, with Antonelli keeping hold of top spot with his 1:33.662. Ferrari's Hamilton was just 0.149s off the young Italian, with Leclerc just behind his teammate after the first flyers, but eventually taking second spot later on.
Russell, having aborted his first flying lap on the softs, could not improve on his P5 place, three tenths down on his teammate with 25 minutes to go, before moving back onto mediums to end the session.
Ahead of Russell came Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Linblad, who unfortunately was the first driver to
bring out the red flag at the Madring this weekend. The 19-year-old lost the rear at Turn 13 - the tight left-hander after La Monumental - and slid into the barrier, bringing an end to his session. Thankfully, the young Briton got out of the car uninjured.
