Marc Marquez
Marc Marquez is one of the most successful riders in MotoGP history, but it’s not just his statistical achievements that make him a fan-favourite. Riding with an aggressive, uncompromising style, Marquez made his name in an era packed with legendary talents like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa.
Marquez burst onto the scene in 2013 following championship success in Moto2, but he shocked the world when he won the premier class title in his rookie season. Marc then defended the title successfully in 2014.
The following years saw Marc collect a further four world championship titles before a devastating crash in Jerez in 2020 sidelined him for the season.
Upon his return in 2021, the performance of the Honda had dropped off considerably, but despite that Marquez still fought valiantly to achieve several podiums and race victories.
After further injuries, surgeries and setbacks, Marc made the decision to leave his long-standing partnership with Honda and join Ducati’s satellite team, Gresini Racing. The move ended up defining a new chapter in Marc’s career as he was signed to the factory team following an impressive 2024 campaign and went on to dominate the 2025 season and claim his seventh premier class title.
Youngest Ever MotoGP Champion
It didn’t take long for the world to recognise the talents of Marc Marquez. With an extreme riding style, the ability to pull of superhuman saves and merciless overtakes, Marquez arrived on the MotoGP scene like a grenade and won his first title at just twenty years of age
Honda Years
Marc Marquez’s dominance on board the Repsol Honda from 2013-19 is truly one of the defining eras in MotoGP history. Winning six championships in seven years against fierce competitors like Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, the Spaniard rapidly established himself in the history books as one of MotoGP’s greatest ever riders.
Rossi vs Marquez
Marquez’s rivalry with Rossi is one of the most notorious and dramatic stories in MotoGP history. While their relationship started out well enough, Rossi, a seven-time premier class champion who dominated the sport from 2001-2009, eventually lost his cool in the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
After an intense battle for third place in which the pair made contact several times, Rossi kicked Marquez from his motorcycle in a slow right-hand corner, eventually leading him to be penalized and costing him the 2015 world championship.
The pair have maintained a distant and cold relationship ever since, and Rossi even accused Marquez of “destroying our sport”.
Injuries and setbacks
The 2020 season opener in Jerez would mark the beginning of the toughest spell in Marquez’s career. After an incredible save where he ran into the gravel from the lead of the race, Marc then battled back in extraordinary style from 16th place back up to third before suffering a huge high-side and then being hit by his own bike at very high speed.
The impact left Marquez needing surgery and a metal plate installed into his right arm and he was ruled out for the rest of the season.
The next two years saw Marquez suffer further injuries, including a brutal high-side in Mandalika. The injuries and the rapidly declining performance of the Honda machinery combined to leave Marquez with just three race victories and a further three podium finishes in the years from 2020-2023.
Ducati Comeback
In 2024, Marc joined his younger brother Alex at Gresini Racing, Ducati’s satellite team. While the title battle was mainly contested between Jorge Martin and Pecco Bagnaia, Marquez consistently impressed on the Ducati machinery, achieving race victories in Aragon, Australia and San Marino.
In 2025 he signed for Ducati’s factory team alongside Bagnaia. Marc dominated the 2025 season and won the championship with a total of 11 race victories and 14 sprint wins.
Marc Marquez’s brother
Marc Marquez’s brother, Alex, also competes in MotoGP. The young Marquez won the Moto2 title in 2019, and finished second behind Marc in the riders’ standings in the 2025 season. They were teammate in the past at Honda and Gresini. Alex continues to ride for the Italian team to this day.
