Norris: "I proved myself wrong" by winning F1 world championship
Lando Norris clinched his first
Formula 1 world championship after finishing third in Abu Dhabi.
The
McLaren driver won the title by two points as Max Verstappen narrowly missed out on a fifth consecutive crown.
Formula 1's new world champion lagged behind his teammate Oscar Piastri but capitalised on errors from the Australian to take the title. Piastri crashed in Azerbaijan and lacked pace in Mexico.
Norris admitted that he proved himself wrong by winning the world championship:
"If I look back on it, my first half of the season – not the most impressive. Certainly, times I made some mistakes, made some bad judgments. I made my errors, as I'm sure every driver would admit to. "But how I managed to turn all of that and have the second half of the season that I had is what makes me very proud – that I've been able to prove myself wrong.
"There were doubts I had in the beginning of the year, and I proved myself wrong. And that's something that makes me very happy."
F1 teams’ disqualification fears prompt last-minute F1 2026 rule tweak
Formula 1 will welcome in a new generation of cars in 2026 with active aero and new engines.
This will place greater emphasis on electric power, with a 50-50 split between electric and petrol power.
However, as teams ran simulations of wet weather conditions, some issues arose.
The skids may become vulnerable at tracks such as Albert Park if the teams run a maximum downforce setup throughout the entirety of a wet race.
As a solution, the 11 teams will now be able to run a partial active aero mode with the rear wing up and the front wing remaining down.
