Hello and welcome to GPblog’s live coverage of the first practice session of the Barcelona Grand Prix weekend! Make sure to follow all the build-up and on-track action from FP1 here!
The newly-named Barcelona-Catalunya GP is the second leg of F1’s ‘European season,’ with the first coming at last weekend’s Monaco GP. The principality saw plenty of action as
Kimi Antonelli made it five wins in a row to extend his lead as the youngest F1 championship leader ever, while his
Mercedes teammate
George Russell finished P12 after receiving multiple penalties in Monte Carlo.
Speaking of penalties, a total of five drivers - including Russell - received five-second penalties for speeding in the Monaco pit lane. One of those drivers was Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, with the Frenchman receiving two of these penalties, and initially losing out on a maiden Monaco podium to Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar after they were applied after the race. However, in shock news, it was announced on Friday that Gasly's podium
will be restored following Alpine's Right of Review.
Also hoping to bounce back from a disappointing Monaco GP weekend will be hometown hero
Charles Leclerc, whose crash under a Safety Car restart saw chaos reign in Monte Carlo. The
Ferrari driver has blamed his brakes for the accident - which led to supplier Brembo
hitting back at the 28-year-old - with Leclerc revealing he will move closer to teammate
Lewis Hamilton’s brake configuration in Barcelona this weekend.
Another story dominating the weekend is the shock revelation that Red Bull’s Ford-backed power unit, their first-ever in F1, has been deemed the grid’s best by the FIA after the first round of Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO). This means it’ll be Red Bull, not clear championship leaders Mercedes, that will be without additional upgrades for the rest of this season. Drivers
Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, as well as other up and down the grid, have expressed their surprise at the news.
Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix weekend weather forecast
The Barcelona weekend kicks off with highs of 27°C in the afternoon, rising to 31°C on Saturday and Sunday. Wind speeds will remain light to moderate, averaging 8.6 km/h with gusts up to 36 km/h but track temperatures will be a factor for teams, with early estimates that it may reach up to 56.2°C.
However, the key detail is that there is almost a 0% chance of rain across the entire Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
