Wolff sets deadline for signing Verstappen

Toto Wolff has confirmed that Mercedes will settle its 2026 driver line-up before the end of the summer break, setting a clear deadline amid swirling speculation around George Russell and Max Verstappen.
Speaking after a difficult Austrian Grand Prix, Wolff acknowledged the weight of the decision and stressed the importance of being respectful to all parties involved, including the drivers and the wider Mercedes organization. “I don't want to leave anyone waiting when a decision should be made,” he told GPblog and other media.
While Verstappen remains at the heart of rumors linking him to a shock switch from Red Bull, Russell’s strong form in 2025 has made the decision anything but straightforward. Wolff admitted there have been “lots of discussions” and hinted the final call will likely land by 'middle of the summer break'.
At a certain stage and in the next couple of months... until the summer break we need to know. Maybe the middle [of the summer break], he said. As the driver market continues to swirl, Mercedes is officially on the clock.

Verstappen out of  contention for the world title in 2025 season?

Lando Norris converted his pole position into a commanding win at the Red Bull Ring, leading a dominant McLaren one-two with Oscar Piastri close behind. The pair treated fans to an intense intra-team battle, but it was Norris who ultimately held firm to claim his third victory of the season. It’s yet another statement from McLaren, who are now firmly in the fight at the front and continuing to build serious momentum.
For Max Verstappen, however, the Austrian Grand Prix was nothing short of a nightmare. The Red Bull driver was forced to retire on the opening lap after contact with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, who also retired from the incident. The championship picture shifts yet again, with Verstappen leaving empty-handed and Norris gaining crucial ground.
