Lando Norris has won the Austrian Grand Prix ahead of his teammate, Oscar Piastri. This means the gap in the standings between the two drivers now stands at 15 points. Charles Leclerc completed the podium at the Red Bull Ring. Lewis Hamilton finished in fourth place, confidently ahead of the only Mercedes driver that crossed the finish line, George Russell.
Max Verstappen did not finish a Grand Prix for the first time in 462 days after he was taken out by Kimi Antonelli. However, he also did not receive another penalty point that would have lead to a suspension.
He,as of tomorrow, will have only nine penalty points to his name.
Liam Lawson scored important points and finished in P6, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Gabriel Bortoleto, as the two had a battle during the final laps of the race. Nico Hülkenberg once again scored points finishing in P9, while Esteban Ocon rounded off the Top 10.
As it happened
Inside the Top 10, all drivers except for Gasly opted for the medium tyres.
The Grand Prix itself started with a delay. Carlos Sainz's race was over before it could begin. The Spaniard's car first stalled on the formation lap, leading to an aborted race start.
After being pushed by the marshals to get off the line, Sainz was required to start from the pit lane. However, after lining up at the exit of the pit lane, his brakes caught fire, leading to Williams retiring his car.
After a 15 minute delay, the Austrian Grand Prix finally got underway. Norris got off to a great start, and his teammate Piastri also overtook Leclerc into Turn 1. The Australian tried to get past the Briton as well into Turn 3, but it did not work out for him.
By Turn 3, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli's race has ended, as the Italian rookie locked up,
and hit the Dutchman. As both cars stopped on the track, the Safety Car was called out.
After the restart, George Russell also battled hard against the two Ferraris from Turn 3 to Turn 5. In the end, after being overtaken by his ex-teammate after the start, Russell fell back to P5.
On Lap 11, Piastri made his first move on Norris into Turn 3, but into Turn 4, Norris managed to re-take the lead.
The first pit stops, McLaren battle continues
In terms of the frontrunners, already being seven second behind Hamilton, Russell pitted first on Lap 18.
On Lap 20, the battle between the two papaya cars continued. Into Turn 4, Piastri locked up, and ended up barely missing a collision with his teammate. At the end of the lap, the Briton was called into the pit lane by the Woking-based team as well.
From Lap 25 to 27, in the order of Piastri, Leclerc and Hamilton, these three drivers all switched tyres, all opting for a set of hards.
On Lap 31, Yuki Tsunoda also locked horns with Franco Colapinto. Into Turn 4, the Red Bull driver spun the young Argentinian around, leading to him receiving a 10-second time penalty by the stewards.
The gaps between the frontrunners remained constant afterwards. The two Ferrari drivers pitted on Lap 50 and 51 respectively. Hamilton wanted to extend his stint, but the Scuderia did not agree.
Norris pitted on Lap 52, and Piastri did the same a lap later. After re-entering the track, the Australian got impeded by another battle between Tsunoda and Colapinto, and the Alpine driver also forced him onto the grass, leading to him losing more time to Norris.
Piastri continued to close the gap during the final laps, but he could never edge into DRS distance, as Norris claimed his third Grand Prix victory of the 2025 season.
