The Grand Prix of the Netherlands at Zandvoort is scheduled for the upcoming weekend in the Formula 1. Hundreds of thousands of Max Verstappen fans are going to the Dutch dunes in orange. Circuit designer Jarno Zaffelli speaks a few days before the Dutch Grand Prix about the track and the street circuit in Madrid. With the company Dromo, Zaffelli was responsible for the adjustments that were made to the track before the premier class returned to the Netherlands in 2021. For the Italian, designing in Zandvoort was even a highlight.
“I am not just saying this because I'm currently talking to a Dutch person. For us as a company, Zandvoort has been the highlight of our career so far. In many places, you have to compromise and your initial ideas and designs must be slightly altered. In Zandvoort this was not really the case. There we mostly had to consider environmental requirements and that sort of thing,” said the designer to De Telegraaf.
Grand Prix on the streets in Madrid, no more Zandvoort
The upcoming weekend edition is already the fifth time since 2021, but after the sixth time it will end. After 2026, the Dutch Grand Prix is no longer on the calendar in Formula 1. A race that is scheduled for 2026 is the Grand Prix of Madrid. Zaffelli has been hired to design the circuit. There were stories circulating that the circuit would not be completed in time, but according to the Italian, everything is on schedule.
With the Hugenholtz turn and the Arie Luyendijk turn, Zandvoort is unique in Formula 1. You don't often see such banking turns. The banking turns of Zandvoort inspired the Grand Prix in Madrid on the Madring.
“Yes, we wanted to approach it even more extremely in Madrid, but unfortunately that was not possible. But it's clear that Zandvoort has opened our eyes. I think at some point it will be possible to design something steeper than what we see in Zandvoort, but that will probably still take a few years.”
