Max Verstappen did not expect to qualify on the front row of the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix. The Dutchman was positive after just a few hundredths of a second separated from pole position today. Verstappen did not have a flawless run-up to qualifying.
Red Bull Racing still had plenty of setup issues on Saturday morning, making a front-row spot far from a given.
"If you would have told me yesterday to be on the front row, I would have definitely taken it,
" he said afterward.
"This morning we had quite some difficulties with the car so heading into qualifying and being up there was extremely positive."Verstappen did not expect a front row in the Monaco GP
The four-time world champion ultimately fell just
0.043 seconds short of Antonelli. Verstappen is especially pleased with how his qualifying unfolded on a circuit where traffic and the walls are constantly in play.
"So overall, of course, extremely happy with how qualifying went, how all the laps went even though you have to deal with all the traffic, and also the walls
," the Dutchman continued.
"But I'm happy to be on the front row and then, tomorrow, let's see in the start."That keeps Verstappen in contention for a strong result in a race where the start traditionally plays a key role. Still, the Red Bull driver does not expect an easy opening phase. "These cars are quite complicated to start. I have two cars behind me that start quite well but we'll see," he added, referring to the Ferraris, which under the new regulations almost always have a good launch.
Verstappen ultimately ended qualifying with a good feeling, especially given the issues Red Bull was still struggling with earlier in the day. "This was a good day and definitely enjoyed it in qualifying," Verstappen concluded.
