New footage has emerged showing Liam Lawson's near miss with two marshals at the Mexican Grand Prix. Two marshals went to collect debris that was left in the grass between Turns 1-2, with the pair crossing the circuit, to the surprise of Racing Bulls driver Lawson, who almost hit the pair whilst they returned back to their post at the first corner.
Videos from fans in the grandstands have now given additional context, with two new angles of this incident now clear to see.
Lawson had pitted on the second lap after contact with Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr on the opening lap left the New Zealander with damage to his Racing Bulls car. With Lawson pitting, it meant that around 20 seconds had passed since the last car, which was Alpine's Franco Colapinto, went through the first corner.
After the race,
Lawson slammed the 'dangerous' incident and claimed that he
"Couldn't believe" the events that unfolded before him.
After the Grand Prix on Sunday, the
FIA released this statement:
“Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner,” said the FIA’s statement. “On lap three, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once all cars had passed turn one.“As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded, and a double yellow flag was shown in that area. We are still investigating what occurred after that point.
"We would like to underline our respect and appreciation for the local ASN, OMDAI, as well as the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and their marshals, who are volunteers and play a vital role in the safe and successful running of our sport."
