The Formula 3 feature race was set for Sunday morning, but heavy rainfall prior to the start created challenging conditions. The downpour not only delayed the start of the race but also introduced a strategic dilemma for teams, as they had to quickly adapt to the wet track. The start of the Formula 3 feature race was delayed by five minutes, with the formation lap beginning slightly later than scheduled.
Although the rain had stopped by the time the race got underway, earlier showers had left the track wet, making for tricky conditions in the opening laps despite the dry skies.
Strategies varied widely on the wet
Silverstone circuit, with some drivers opting for slicks while others went with rain tyres.
Despite the challenging conditions, the start went relatively smoothly, with all cars making it through the opening corners without incident. However, as the race settled in, the slick-shod drivers began to struggle.
The lack of grip soon took its toll, and several began to spin as the wet patches proved too tricky to navigate on dry-weather tyres.
Rain continued to intensify throughout the Feature Race, and on Lap 15, the session was red flagged for the rain. After a 10-minute wait, as race control's aim was to resume at 10:25 local time, the race was not resumed because of the strict schedule.
As a result, Aston Martin junior Mari Boya claimed his first victory of the season, with Theophile Nael and Noel Leon completing the podium.
Will It Also Rain During the F1 British Grand Prix?
Rain is expected to play a major role in the early part of Sunday at Silverstone, with showers forecast throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. This means both the Formula 3 and Formula 2 races are likely to take place in wet or changing conditions.
The rain is predicted to clear roughly an hour before the Formula 1 Grand Prix is set to begin. That should, in theory, allow for a dry race.
But with Silverstone’s famously unpredictable weather, teams and drivers will need to remain on high alert.
