Lando Norris asked his race engineer, Will Joseph, over the team radio whether it was possible to win the British Grand Prix by driving through the pit lane.
After Max Verstappen's incident in the closing laps of the British Grand Prix, the Safety Car was deployed at Silverstone, bunching up the field. For most of the race, defending world champion Norris had been running in sixth place, but after Kimi Antonelli developed car issues and Verstappen retired, he found himself in P4 behind the Safety Car.
In the end, the race finished behind the Safety Car. The FIA also issued a statement: "The Safety Car period regulation, Article B5.13.5, states that one lap must be completed following the unlapping procedure. This process was followed by Race Operations. The 'Safety Car In This Lap' message was displayed erroneously due to a software error."

Norris tries to outsmart the drivers ahead

Over the team radio, the defending world champion asked whether it was possible to win the race by entering the pit lane. Due to the unique layout of the Silverstone Circuit, a car can reach the finish line more quickly that way.

Norris said: "You’re not allowed to box are you? You can’t win it in the pit lane?"
"No, you're not," Will Joseph answered to Norris. "Shame," the British driver concluded.
Michael Schumacher has previously won a British Grand Prix in the pit lane as well, although that was for a slightly different reason. The Ferrari driver crossed the finish line after entering to serve a stop-and-go penalty, and claimed victory that way.

Norris admits McLaren was 'pretty shocking' despite unlikely P4 at Silverstone

The Briton was critical of McLaren's race pace after stepping on the Sprint podium and then finishing fourth in the end at Silverstone. Speaking to GPblog, among others, he explained: "Everything but the result, pretty shocking.
"I don't know how we finished P4 today, honestly. But a big part of it nowadays is reliability, I don't know what happened to Kimi, and Max, and things like that. A big part of it is just not making mistakes and reliability, and we got that bit right today but the pace was pretty poor. Not a nice car to drive, one of the hardest cars I've ever driven in Formula 1. Many things we need to do better."
He continued: "I don't know... a lot of people didn't do a good job I guess. There's no way we can finish P2 in Miami and have a car like this today. Other people have brought a lot of upgrades and updates since, and we kind of haven't, so yeah, nothing has brought us that much performance. I don't know, the car was just undriveable."
