Mercedes can simply use Petronas' fuel in Australia, GPblog has learned.
In the run-up to the start of the season, there were questions not only about the compression ratio of the Mercedes power unit, but there was also some uncertainty surrounding the Petronas fuel. During winter testing in Bahrain, it emerged that the homologation of that fuel had not yet been fully completed.
That process turned out to be more complicated this year than before. With the introduction of sustainable fuels under the new engine regulations, not only does the end product have to be checked, but the entire production process as well. An external party is involved in this before the FIA ultimately grants official approval.

Mercedes can run its own fuel in Australia

It was therefore suggested that Mercedes and its customer teams (McLaren, Williams, and Alpine) might have to run an alternative fuel temporarily if the homologation did not come through in time. Toto Wolff already downplayed those reports in Bahrain to GPblog, among others, stating that there were no concerns within the team about the situation.
That stance appears to have been justified. GPblog understands that the fuel has been homologated and can therefore be used as normal during the Australian Grand Prix.
Final confirmation formally still lies with the FIA, which must validate all fuels from the various manufacturers. So far, none of the engine manufacturers has officially announced that their fuel has been homologated. As such, the fuss surrounding the fuel seems to have ultimately been much ado about nothing.
