Monaco GP result overturned again as Red Bull and McLaren win appeal

The case dates back to the Monaco Grand Prix, where Pierre Gasly was handed two five-second time penalties that initially dropped him from third to seventh in the final classification. Alpine subsequently lodged a Right of Review, and on 12 June the stewards decided to cancel both penalties, restoring Gasly’s original result.

That decision was then appealed by McLaren and Red Bull, with the FIA International Court of Appeal now ruling in their favour. Gasly’s two five-second penalties have therefore been reinstated and the stewards’ 12 June decision set aside, meaning the official race classification and corresponding championship points must be amended accordingly, effectively restoring the original outcome that saw Gasly classified seventh.

The FIA and Alpine have also been ordered to each pay 50% of the costs of the proceedings, while the deposits paid by McLaren, Red Bull and Racing Bulls will be reimbursed.

The FIA has reacted to the outcome by announcing a wider review of some of its Formula 1 procedures. Following the ICA ruling, the governing body will examine the operation and methodology of the championship's timing system and the regulations surrounding it, while the Right of Review and appeal processes will also come under scrutiny. Despite the outcome of the case, the FIA stressed its confidence in the independence and objectivity of its stewards, highlighting the different circumstances in which they and the Court reach their decisions.

Alpine also reacted to the outcome of the appeal, expressing its disappointment and frustration with the decision reached: "The team expresses its disappointment and frustration with the outcome reached by the FIA International Court of Appeal relating to the result of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix. While we disagree with the decision, and still fully maintain that Car #10 did not exceed the Pit Lane speed limit at any point during the race, the team acknowledges the decision of the judging panel from the recent hearing in Paris.
