The world-famous DJ Alan Walker hopes he has created a new Formula 1 hit with The Sting Within Me. Last Saturday, the track premiered during a show in Barcelona; beforehand, the artist spoke with GPblog. Looking slightly uncomfortable, Alan Walker sits at the head of the table as, for a select group of media, his new single—and potential
F1 anthem—is played for the first time. Only when the final notes fade and the attendees applaud, does a cautious smile appear. Mission accomplished, the British-Norwegian DJ seems to think.
The feeling of Formula 1
His task wasn’t easy: at the request of Formula 1 and one of its commercial partners, to create a new anthem for the sport. “The idea was to sample sounds of Formula One, like what makes Formula One,” Walker explains to, among others, GPblog about the track. “We got sent a bunch of samples, like recording some of the racetracks and a lot of like little sound bites that you can just put in the digital audio workshop and then start tweaking, and then sooner or later you have a song."
“Very short,” Walker said about the time he had to make the track. “But not too short. But it was like alongside the different ideas, the direction that was wanted and tweaks that were intended to be done. Like sooner or later, it all works out. Like you heard the song, we got the lyrics written, we got a great vocalist to sing it, and in the end, we got a great product."
For Formula 1, Walker—who has ten million, mostly young, followers on Instagram—was a logical artist to approach for the project because he appeals to a key target audience for the sport. In turn, Walker is a fan of F1. “I've always been a big fan of sports, like racing,” he says in response to a question from GPblog.
“I love go-karting, for example. So, for me, when we got the offer on the table to make something that and to do something that captures the emotions, the feelings leading up to the race, the anticipation, I think it was kind of like the best of both worlds. I got to combine my universe of music and the visual universe, but also bring in the universe of Formula One.”
Walker picks his favourites
That Walker really does follow the sport closely becomes clear when he’s asked to name his favourite for the world title. "Ooh, that's a great question. With a couple of races being off the calendar, Kimi [Antonelli] already having a great head start. I think it will be pretty, what do you say, like toe to toe between him and George [Russell]."
"But Lewis is also in second place, so that could also be very interesting. Very hard to say who will be taking, like, who's going to be the number one in the end. But we saw a bunch of teams brought quite extensive upgrades for this race this weekend, so it will be cool to see. But I have for this race today my money on Russell."
