George Russell claimed a stunning victory at the Australian Grand Prix, seizing the lead of the Drivers’ Championship for the first time in his career.
The race, which began amid a touch of chaos, continued to unravel as it progressed. Several drivers, including home hero Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg, recorded DNSs, the former crashing out, while the latter was wheeled back into the pit lane.

Early on, Charles Leclerc and George Russell were locked in a fierce battle after the Scuderia Ferrari driver surged to the lead in the opening laps. The pair exchanged positions multiple times throughout the race, until the Virtual Safety Cars neutralised proceedings twice due to incidents involving Isack Hadjar and, later, Valtteri Bottas.
Further down the field, several drivers continued to make gains, with notable position changes particularly evident at the start of the race.
Once the dust settled, little stood in the way of Russell and Mercedes, who converted their pole positions into victory and a second-place finish, marking the 61st one-two in the team’s illustrious history.
Leclerc secured the final podium spot, which also moved him up to third in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
