The Mercedes team stormed to victory at the Australian Grand Prix, with George Russell sealing victory ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli.

How the Australian Grand Prix unfolded

The race at Albert Park unravelled into outright chaos even before the cars made it to the grid, with home hero Oscar Piastri suffering a crash at Turn 4 on his lap to the grid. The shunt the McLaren driver endured set the tone for what would subsequently unfold, as Audi's Nico Hulkenberg would soon be wheeled back into the pitlane following an issue encountered ahead of the start of the Grand Prix.
On the opening lap, Scuderia Ferrari, with its drivers executing a flawless start, surged to the top of the field. Charles Leclerc jumped to first place from fourth, while Lewis Hamilton climbed to third from seventh.

Leclerc would then battle George Russell, who had started on pole, for much of the opening stint, with both drivers exchanging the lead through much of the initial sequence.
The first interruption to this battle came when Red Bull Racing’s Isack Hadjar suffered a technical problem. The French driver saw his race go up in smoke on lap 11, quite literally.
The Virtual Safety Car was deployed as the Mercedes team double-stacked both of its drivers. Shortly after, another pit window opened when Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas suffered an on-track issue a few laps later.

This second Virtual Safety Car period saw several drivers, including Max Verstappen, who had started the race in 20th, make pit stops.
While action unfolded at the front of the grid, the rear wasn’t without drama. Fernando Alonso, in the problem-plagued AMR26 Aston Martin, charged up seven places on the opening lap but was forced into an early stop before rejoining, only to retire from the race completely.
The final stretch of the race unfolded in a relatively quiet manner, with a few battles between Verstappen and Lando Norris. However, it was the Mercedes team which proved too strong for the grid.
