McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have weighed in on the possibility of Max Verstappen walking away from Formula 1. Piastri believes it would be a “shame” if Verstappen walked away from F1
The four-time world champion has made it increasingly clear that he is seriously considering his future in Formula 1, a topic that first caused a stir in Suzuka and has continued to generate debate in the weeks since.
Speaking to GPblog, among other media, the Australian was the first of the two McLaren drivers to address the possibility of the Dutchman stepping away, admitting it would be a real loss for the sport and stressing that, as drivers, the goal is always to compete against the very best and measure themselves at that level.
"Would be a shame if that does end up happening. I think clearly the Red Bull doesn't look like the most competitive car at the moment, but I think the regulations are obviously being worked on. They've needed quite a lot of work and they're certainly more complex.
"I think it would be a shame for the sport to lose Max, especially at this point in his career as well. It would be a big loss for the sport as a whole. I think for us as drivers, we want to race against the best and try and prove ourselves against the best.
"I think Max has shown his caliber in the last 10 years and I think especially the last five or six he's been the benchmark, so I think for everyone it would be a pretty big shame and obviously not a great look."

Norris enjoyed watching Verstappen in GT racing
Norris added that Verstappen has earned the right to do whatever he wants after winning four world championships, highlighting how he has always been outspoken and true to himself.
He admitted it would be a real loss for the sport if he were to leave, given he is likely one of the best drivers Formula 1 has ever seen, and stressed that, while he makes life incredibly tough on track, racing against him is ultimately what drivers strive for.
"Max has earned the right to go and do whatever he wants. He's won four world championships, and he's always been that guy. He's not just now. He's always been very open to say what he thinks, whether you agree or not, or whether you should say it or shouldn't. He's himself, and I think that's a very good way to live your life.
"It would be a shame for the sport, it would be a miss for the sport if that does happen. Because he probably is one of the best drivers you'll see in F1 ever. And I think it would be a shame for us because as much as he makes our lives incredibly tough at times, he's always good fun to race against, and it's always cool to race against someone that's won four world championships, and you always feel like you want to race against the best in the world, and he certainly is one of them. The Briton finally admitted he would still enjoy watching him compete in other categories, pointing to GT racing as an example. He also noted that Verstappen has recently spoken about targeting a fifth world title, suggesting he is likely to stay in Formula 1 longer than many expect.
"It would be a loss for the sport, but to be honest, I enjoyed watching the GTs on the weekend, and if it gives me something to go watch and watch him in other categories, that's also a good thing for me. I also saw he said he wants to win a fifth world championship at the minute so I'm sure he'll stay longer than people say."

In an exclusive interview with GPblog, he pointed out that part of the challenge for Verstappen lies in dealing with a car that is no longer consistently competitive, something he has rarely experienced throughout his career.
Steiner stressed that Verstappen is still widely regarded as the biggest talent on the grid, and as a result, would have no shortage of options if Red Bull were unable to meet his expectations. He suggested that, should the current situation fail to improve, the Dutchman would naturally look elsewhere for a package capable of delivering what he demands.
